Bór Kunowski: a barn turned into a place of murder
4 July 1943 · Burning people alive and killings during pacifications
The deaths of people imprisoned in a barn are the central event of the pacification of Bór Kunowski. Alongside victims of fire were people killed by gunfire. Comparing the studies shows that even when the total is agreed, the number burned can be presented incorrectly. The article therefore gives the difference directly and does not conceal it behind one exact figure. [1] [2]

People inside the barn
The Brody Commune Office describes the gathering and burning in a barn of a group of residents that included mothers with young children. Others died from bullets. The site of the barn is marked by an obelisk with a cross, while the former site of a common grave lies in a forest clearing. These two points commemorate separate stages: the killing and the burial. [1]
A discrepancy that should not be corrected by intuition
A local-government report for the eightieth anniversary gives 21 people burned and 22 shot. Another page of the same Office lists 22 people burned and a different composition of that group. Agreement over the total therefore does not settle the detailed arithmetic. Establishing it requires comparing victim lists and post-war documentation. [1] [2]
Memory of survivors
A report on the 2023 observances names residents who survived the pacification and took part in the ceremony. Their participation is not, however, a published testimony. The anniversary information helps locate people and places connected with memory of the crime; it does not replace a critical edition of their recollections. [1]
Limits of the findings
We do not equate articles by the same local authority with independent testimony. The division of 21/22 between victims of fire and gunfire has not been resolved. [1] [2]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
