Luta: two pacifications during Holy Week
18 and 22 April 1943 · Burning people alive and killings during pacifications
Memory of Luta joins two days of German terror during Holy Week. They must not be portrayed as one attack with a fully reconstructed hourly sequence. Available material indicates a combined count and some methods, while local memorials preserve the village’s name and the memory of families. [1] [2]
Editorial account based on the sources listed below. Sources checked: 5 September 2026.
- Victims and toll
- 30 people in total.
- Perpetrators
- German Order Police from Końskie.
- Documented methods
- burning alive · killing residents · burning farmsteads
A separate group of victims
The IPN count lists seven people burned alive: three women and four children. [1]
Memory of the local community
The County Office in Końskie describes a commemoration of the German crime against the inhabitants of Luta. It indicates that children were among the victims and that buildings were burned. The material also refers to a historical account published in a local weekly. Such traces help direct further research; they do not replace testimony itself. [2]
Two dates, one cautious total
The sum given in the article refers to both operations. The calendar read does not distribute all the dead between the individual days or name the perpetrator of every act. We therefore introduce no additional daily figures. This preserves confirmed findings without suggesting that a detailed protocol of both pacifications is available. [1]
Limits of the findings
A brief source basis: a calendar and material about commemoration. There is no complete nominal list or a breakdown of the count between 18 and 22 April. [1] [2]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
