Gruszowiec: families in locked and burning homes
1 November 1944 · Burning people alive and killings during pacifications
In Gruszowiec, the Germans used homes as a trap for detained residents. The attack included shooting at escapees, throwing grenades and starting fires. Testimony cited by the IPN permits this sequence to be described, but does not separately establish the cause of death of every person later found among charred bodies. [1]

Attack on settlements
The German unit arrived in the afternoon. It attacked the settlements of Granice, Miśkowce and Wrony. Some detainees were locked in homes into which grenades were thrown and which were then set on fire. The killing was accompanied by the plunder of animals. [1]
Accounts from the crime scene
The IPN cites testimony by Jan Drąg and Wiktoria Sułkowska. Her description of charred bodies carries a qualification: she did not know whether the victims had first been shot. We retain that uncertainty. The appearance of the remains alone does not prove that every person died in fire. [1]
The youngest victim
Among the dead was the several-week-old child of Maria and Michał Palkij. According to the source, the child had not yet been entered in the parish registers. This detail helps explain the cautious wording of the count. A rounding or question mark should not erase the child from the memory of the murdered family. [1]
Limits of the findings
One contemporary institutional study cites witness accounts. The number of victims and individual causes of death are not conclusively settled in it. [1]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
