Jabłoń-Dobki: people burned during a pacification
8 March 1944 · Burning people alive and killings during pacifications
The crime in Jabłoń-Dobki was examined in investigation S 65/09/Zn. Its published findings confirm that some residents were burned alive. They do not, however, allow one method of death to be assigned to all those killed or the direct role of every participant in the German expedition to be reconstructed. These limits of documentation must be retained in the account. [1]

- German gendarmerie from Wysokie Mazowieckie and a Wehrmacht unit from Jabłoń Kościelna.
- Documented methods

From a skirmish to reprisals against residents
A clash between a gendarmerie patrol and partisans took place nearby that day. After one gendarme was killed, German police and military forces were sent to the village. Residents’ property was taken, and people were killed by gunfire and in burning buildings. The IPN statement explicitly describes both methods, although its brief heading mentions only shooting. [1]
Two figures in the documentation
The count adopted in the statement differs from the number recorded in the description of IPN archival unit Bi 156/156. That description must not be treated as a new investigation, nor should two IPN publications be regarded as two independent proofs. The discrepancy remains visible until nominal lists and the scope of both documents are compared. [1] [2]
What was determined in the investigation
The proceedings were discontinued on 28 February 2011 because the perpetrators were not identified. Such grounds mean that no identities were established that would permit prosecution to continue; they do not deny the massacre itself. The public summary provides no basis for a detailed reconstruction of the use of petrol and grenades in one specific building. [1]
Limits of the findings
The statement used does not establish the number of people burned. The archival-unit description documents an older count but does not replace reading its contents. [1] [2]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
