Mołdawa, Zawały and nearby settlements: a shared count for the pacification
16–19 October 1943 · Burning people alive and killings during pacifications
This account covers an operation in several localities. This is necessary to avoid assigning the losses of the entire area to one village. Local memorials focus on Zawały and Mołdawa, while a historical calendar covers a broader area and several days. The difference in scope explains why numbers alone do not suffice for comparing accounts. [1] [2]
Editorial account based on the sources listed below. Sources checked: 5 September 2026.
- Victims and toll
- 105 Poles in seven localities; about 50 burned alive.
- Perpetrators
- German Order Police (Ordnungspolizei).
- Documented methods
- burning alive · destroying farmsteads
One operation, several localities
The calendar also includes Wólka Modrzejowska, Wólka Kolonia, Dębowe Pole, Borsuki and Karczma Miłkowska. Zawały was completely burned. [1]
Local memory
A report on anniversary observances in “Życie Powiśla” speaks of the deaths of 52 people in Zawały and part of Mołdawa, including entire families. It dates the events to the night of 17–18 October. This is an account of a narrower fragment of the operation. It is not a basis for replacing the count that covers seven place names with it. [2]
Limits of reconstruction
The combination of names and dates makes it possible to identify the crime, but not to assign a place and method of death to every victim. We do not fill that gap with descriptions of scenes taken from other pacifications. Reconstructing the fate of individual families requires further work on nominal lists and investigative documentation. [1] [2]
Limits of the findings
The number of people burned is an estimate for the entire operation. We do not know the distribution of all victims among localities. The anniversary article is not a new investigative finding. [1] [2]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
