Mysłów: death by bullets and in burning buildings

The account of Mysłów requires particular caution when identifying methods of death. A short scholarly study permits the crime to be recorded, but not the separate fate of every person killed to be reconstructed. We therefore distinguish the toll of the entire pacification from the undetermined number of victims of particular methods of violence. The brevity of the source is not an invitation to fill the narrative with conjecture. [1]

Editorial account based on the sources listed below. Sources checked: 5 September 2026.

Basis for the facts and their qualifications: [1]

A surrounded village

Jedynak describes the encirclement and burning of Mysłów by the Wehrmacht and gunfire at people fleeing. Some residents died in cellars as a result of fire or suffocation. [1]

What the toll actually says

The figure 22 includes all those killed identified in the study, and 10 is the number of children among them. This source does not tell us the proportions of deaths by bullets, fire and suffocation. A caption reading ‘22 burned alive’ would alter the content of the finding. [1]

The limit of reconstruction

The article remains brief because the basis for its account is concise. We do not invent dialogue, the sequence of individual deaths, or details of violence which the publication does not give. Readers receive an exact reference to the page of the study and can check its wording regarding methods of killing. [1]

Limits of the findings

One scholarly study was read directly; the register documents cited by its author were not analysed separately. There is no basis for claiming that all victims were burned alive. [1]

How we assess sources

The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
