Sobień and Skronina: people burned in an oil mill

The crime in Sobień and Skronina exemplifies a clearly identified method alongside an uncertain total of victims. Two IPN studies confirm people being burned but assemble the number of all those killed differently. The article gives the discrepancy because repeating only the higher or lower figure would conceal the actual state of documentation. [1] [2]

Basis for the facts and their qualifications: [1] [2]

Fire in the oil mill

Andrzej Jankowski, in the volume “Crimes of the Past”, describes the killing of sixteen people by burning. He links the operation with the illegal running of an oil mill. He also reports men being deported to camps and the destruction of nineteen farmsteads. In a footnote he refers to the documentation of the District Commission in Kielce, file no. 36/68. [1]

Divergent figures

The newer calendar locates the burning in the oil mill and gives a larger overall count. The older study poses an additional problem: its listed categories by sex and age add up to 38 although the author gave 37 overall. This is an inconsistency in the text, not a basis for inventing another version of the victim list. [1] [2]

What follows from the comparison

The documentation permits identification of a mass murder and a particularly cruel method. It does not permit a loss account to be closed on the basis of brief descriptions alone. The range given reflects the difference between publications, not a statistical margin of error. Further determination should rest on the files and nominal lists to which the cited reference leads. Limits of the findings

The numbers 37 and 47 are source variants. The older publication contains an internally inconsistent breakdown. File no. 36/68 was not independently read. [1] [2]

How we assess sources

The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
