Sochy: murder, arson and an air raid on the village
1 June 1943 · Burning people alive and killings during pacifications
The crime in Sochy unfolded in several successive stages. Residents were murdered in homes and while fleeing; farmsteads holding wounded people were set on fire. German aircraft then appeared. This combination of ground and aerial violence does not permit the events to be reduced to ordinary bombing or the entire count to be attributed only to victims of fire. [1] [2]

Attack on residents
Units surrounded Sochy in the morning. According to the IPN, houses containing wounded people were set on fire, and captured people were thrown into the flames. Entire families fell victim. The account thus identifies direct acts against people, not merely the destruction of buildings. Among the reasons for choosing the village, the IPN names assistance to partisans and failure to meet quotas. [1]
Fire also beyond the buildings
The Museum of the Second World War notes the participation of Ukrainian auxiliary police alongside German personnel. After the units withdrew, aircraft arrived, bombed the village and strafed nearby fields. The testimony of Bronisława Szwara cited by the museum also describes a German soldier shooting at close range at her family hiding in grain. Flight beyond the farmsteads did not guarantee safety. [2]
Cemetery and figures
The IPN distinguishes the number identified from estimates of all people killed. Victims were buried in a special cemetery at the edge of the forest, on the site of one of the burned houses. We do not add these alternative totals together or reproduce the demographic breakdown from a museum card whose components do not match the rounded total it gives. [1] [2]
Limits of the findings
There is no certain breakdown of the count by method or identification of all direct perpetrators. The expedition had a mixed composition; we do not attribute the entire operation to an ethnically uniform group. [1] [2]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
