Strużki: murdered children and the survival of Stanisław Wiącek
3 June 1943 · Torture, maiming and killing of defenceless people
The history of Strużki can be told through the fate of its youngest residents. Paweł Żołądek’s study lists three infants killed with bayonets and a child who survived beneath his grandmother’s body. It also shows why exact location and the distinction between versions of testimony are necessary even when the fact of the German crime itself is beyond doubt. [1]

- killing infants with bayonets · shooting · burning people during the operation and its aftermath
The youngest victims
The IPN lists a six-day-old girl from the Dróżdż family, approximately five-month-old Mieczysław Woś and approximately six-month-old Helena Bobek. The author states that they died from bayonet blows. The children could not escape on their own. [1]
A shattered family
Stanisław Wiącek survived beneath the body of his shot grandmother, Agnieszka. The study compares differing accounts of how he later got out of the area under fire. His mother Stefania and the woman accompanying her were locked in a barn by gendarmes and burned in Tursko Wielkie. This detail must not be transferred to Strużki itself. [1]
Burial and responsibility
The victims were buried on 5 June in the cemetery at Niekrasów. Village head Eugeniusz Wiącek testified at the trial of Herbert Böttcher. Convicting a superior of the German formations was not equivalent to punishing the direct perpetrators. [1]
Limits of the findings
The accounts of Stanisław Wiącek’s survival differ in details. His mother was burned in Tursko Wielkie. The description of methods relies on an IPN study and does not claim independent reading of the 1947 files. [1]

How we assess sources
The evidence base consists primarily of Polish scholarly publications, investigative findings, archives, museums and documented witness accounts. Reliability is assessed through the document’s provenance, scholarly method and the ability to check the finding. Statements by perpetrators and family accounts of perpetrators require especially critical comparison with other material. Two pages from the same institution may repeat one finding; they are not automatically treated as independent confirmation.
